Humbolt Penguins

Our Penguin Sanctuary is home to a family of rare Humboldt Penguins.
The name Humboldt came from the early European explorer who first saw these animals.

Humboldts are flightless marine birds, which is true of all penguins, and are very well suited to their natural environment around the coastal areas of Peru and Chile. Humboldt´s wings operate effectively as narrow flippers, making them very agile and speedy swimmers. In the water they cruise at a speed of around 5 miles per hour, rising to 10 mph if they are hunting or fleeing predators.

Our Penguins

Jess was born on 13th of April 2004 in Berlin then she was moved to Blankenberge early in 2005 and later that year Jess was moved to us.

Each penguin has a different coloured tag to be able to tell them apart.

Male penguins have a coloured band on their right wing and females on their left wing.

Jess´s tag colour is green.

Charlie was born on the 19th of April 2002. Charlie is also a very cheeky penguin who loves her food, she will often leap for it from a great distance and sometimes it looks like she is trying to fly to get it.

Each penguin has a different coloured tag to be able to tell them apart.

Male penguins have a coloured band on their right wing and females on their left wing.

Charlie´s tag colour is yellow.

Harvey was born on the 19th of April 2002 and
is a very funny fellow.

He loves to chase shadows on the sand, loose feathers at moulting time and even bumble bees are not safe from him.

Each penguin has a different coloured tag to be able to tell them apart.

Male penguins have a coloured band on their right wing and females on their left wing.

Harvey´s tag colour is blue.

Joepi was born on 11th of April 2004 in Berlin then moved to Blankenberge early in 2005 and has now moved to us. He is happily attached to his partner Jess.

Each penguin has a different coloured tag to be able to tell them apart.

Male penguins have a coloured band on their right wing and females on their left wing.

Joepi´s tag colour is blue.

Beau was born on the 15th of April 2004 in Berlin, same place as Jess and Joepi, then moved to Blankenberge in early 2005 and was moved to us later that year.

Each penguin has a different coloured tag to be able to tell them apart.

Male penguins have a coloured band on their right wing and females on their left wing.

Beau´s tag colour is black.

Elly was born on the 31st March 2009 at Blankenberge SEA LIFE Centre in Belguin. She was moved to us in February 2011. Elly´s partner is Dimi.

Each penguin has a different coloured tag to be able to tell them apart.

Elly´s tag colour is red and grey.

Dimi was born on the 31st March 2009 at Blankenberge SEA LIFE Centre in Belguin. He was moved to us in February 2011. Dimi´s partner is Elly.

Dimi´s tag colour is blue and red.

Penguins only live in the Southern Hemisphere.
Although Penguins are birds, they have solid bones so they can’t fly.
There are fewer than 10,000 pairs of Humboldt Penguins left in the word.
