Cownose Stingray

In the wild, Cownose Stingrays can be found in schools of up to 10,000! Guests of SEA LIFE Minnesota can actually watch our Rays being fed – check out the Feeding times page for times.

Play with the Rays

Cownose Stingrays can be found in two areas within the Aquarium:

Ray Lagoon (pictured to the right)
Rainbow Reef (the first exhibit within the Ocean Tunnel)

Children of all ages can play with the Rays by climbing above and below Ray Lagoon. A special observation deck is available for guests to look down upon the many Sting Rays, Eels, and Guitarfish living there. Then, little explorers can get up-close to their favorite sea creatures by climbing below Ray Lagoon and gazing through unique viewing bubbles!

Cownose Stingrays can also be found in Rainbow Reef, among hundreds of other tropical fish. Adventurers over the age of 9 can snorkel in Rainbow Reef. More info available here!

If a customer asks “Why do the Rays have open wounds?” We tell them it’s a result of their breeding behavior where the male will clamp hold of the female during copulation.
The male has 2 large finger-like stumps called claspers on either side of their tail. These are used to cling to the female. Claspers are completely absent in the females.
