Moon Jellyfish

These Jellyfish are common around the British Shoreline, and are widespread throughout the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans too. You can recognise the Moon Jellyfish by the 4 circular rings under the translucent body.

Most Jellyfish are comparably harmless. If you got stung by a Moon Jellyfish it would be no more than an irritant. Some jellyfish, however, can kill.

These Jellyfish feed on plankton that sticks to a special mucus layer. Did you know that these jellyfish rely on the water current to move, as they can only propel themselves up and down?

The Moon Jellyfish is part of our 2012 special exhibit "Jellyfish Discovery!" >
