Pup Rescues 2013/14

Welcome to Sanctuary! Below you will find information on pups rescued during the 2013/2014 Cornish grey seal pupping season.

This year has been particularly busy with all the stormy weather that's occurred. We have had 56 seals pups in so far this season, and we currently have 48 still on site! We can't release anymore until the weather clears, but as soon as it does we'll be sending some back home. While we do our best to rehabilitate all pups sometimes injury is just too severe: we have had 3 pups that didn't make it this year, Uranus. Orbit and Lovejoy.

"Aurora"

Aurora Pup

I am a female grey seal pup and was rescued on the 22th September 2013 from Port Quinn, near Port Isaac, I had been abandoned at 2 days old. When I came to the Sanctuary I weighed 18 kilos, I am on aquavits and iron. I am now being introduced to fish and when I can eat by myself I will move to the nursery pools.

12/11/13: I am doing really well now, feeding for myself and you can find me in the Convalescence pool with my good friend Eclipse, and soon we both hope to be released.

8/12/13: I am doing so well, they are hoping to release me soon. I’m pretty excited.

09/12/13: I was released at Carbis Bay

"Eclipse"

Eclipse Pup

I am a female grey seal pup and was rescued on the 22nd September from Strangles Beach. I had diarrhoea and a high temperature. When I came to the Sanctuary I was 2.5 weeks old and weighed 28 kilos. I am on antibiotics as a precaution and will move to the nursery pools as soon as I am better.

12/11/13: I now weigh 21.5 kg, which although it is a decrease this means I am competing well for my fish. I’ll be in the convalescence pool if you want to visit me, I’ll be playing with Aurora.

8/12/13: Like Aurora, I have got on so well I’m hoping to be released soon.

09/12/13: I was released at Carbis Bay

"Milkyway"

Milkyway Pup

I am a female grey seal pup and was rescued on the 22nd September from Tresco, Isle of Scilly. When I came to the Sanctuary I was 4 days old and weighed 14 kilos.

27/10/13: The team started force feeding me again, there was a huge storm that prevented the Animal Care team from coming to feed me safely, so I missed my night feeds. The next day I was so hungry, I started feeding myself! And have been eating well ever since!

12/11/13: I’m now a much healthier weight and on the 3rd November was moved down to the nurseries, feeding well and very happy.

20/01/14: I am now in the convalescence pool.

"Mars"

Mars Pup

I am a male grey seal pup and was rescued on the 22nd September from Tintagel, a nice lady from the castle found me. I had puncture wounds and an eye injury. When I came to the Sanctuary I was 10 days old and weighed 18 kilos.

11/12/13: I moved down to the nursery pools on the 10th October, but hadn’t learnt to feed myself and was still being force fed fish twice a day. I finally started to self feed on the 2nd November and by the 8th November weighed 23kg which is when I was moved to the convalescent pool.

8/12/13: I am still feeding well and having lots of fun.

15/02/14: I am doing really well still: its slightlyu crowded due to all my freinds still being around but I hope to be released soon.

"Sebastian"

I am a male grey seal pup. I was transferred by the RSPCA to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary on 23rd September. You will find me in the convalescence pool now, competing and feeding well and it’s been noted that me and Pumpkin are like double trouble. I will be released once the weather calms down, and I can’t wait!

RELEASED 22ND NOVEMBER AT GODREVY

"Moon"

Moon Pup

I am a female grey seal pup and was rescued on the 8th October from Perranporth. I was just 2 days old and had been abandoned by my mum

12/11/13: It’s time to move down to the nurseries to start feeding for myself, by watching the others, apparently I am still a bit defiant though!

8/12/13: I learnt to feed for myself and so moved to the convalescence pool, but I still tend to avoid the other seals, and I am quite antisocial compared to the other seals.

15/02/14: I'm a bit noisier than I was, but like to keep myself to myself. I'm hoping to be released soon.

"Nasa"

Nasa Pup

I am a female grey Seal and I was found at Chapel Porth on 14th October. Unfortunately I had deep wounds on my back but not to worry, they are healing very nicely now, thanks to everyone at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary.

12/11/13: I’ve been on a course of antibiotics and I’m now eating fish all by myself! You’ll find my at the convalescence pool, and the other seal pups better watch out, the animal care team say I’m very feisty! The deep wounds on my back have now healed and I am off treatment, and a very healthy 26kg.

8/12/13: You can see me in the Convalescence pool, feeding well.

09/12/13: I was released at Carbis Bay

"Shuttle"

Shuttle

I am a female grey seal who was rescued on the 18th October. I had been abandoned by my mum as well as having minor puncture wounds and had a nose bleed too. I was about 2 weeks old when I came to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, and have already been moved down to the nursery pools because I’m so fat! My lovely white coat moulted quickly and I love swimming around in the pool.

12/11/13: I was moved to the convalescence pool after doing really well in the Nursery Pool, but developed an ulcer in my right eye and was moved back to the nurseries. I’ve now been moved back up to the hospital today to help it heal.

8/12/13: Back in the Convalescence pool and doing really well, so well I may be released soon.

09/12/13: I was released at Carbis Bay

"Leo"

Leo

I am a male grey seal. At Boscastle harbour on 18th October I was found with a severe mouth infection and a broken jaw, as well as body wounds. I’ve been to the vets where they have realigned my jaw but it will take 4-6 weeks to heal. My lower back is covered with wounds which are being cleaned daily. I am being helped to feed by the staff as my jaw hurts but I am a fighter and hopefully once the pain goes away I will start to feed on my own.

12/11/13: Recovering well from my broken jaw; however it is slightly lopsided so the Vet had to come in and readjust the wire. All of my wounds are nicely healed and I have been swimming in saltwater, which really aids the healing. I’m feeding for myself too and the Vet was very impressed that I had been moved to the nurseries, but I am still on treatment so have to be careful. I’m weighing a good 28kg!

8/12/13: My jaw is healing very well, soon I’ll head to the vets for them to remove my wire! I now have my friend Soyuz with me too!

16/12/13: After doing well in the nurseries I moved to the Convalescence pools, it took me a while to actually get in the pool, but I got there in the end!

09/12/13: I was released at Carbis Bay

"Halley"

Halley Pup

I am a female grey seal. I’ve had a very adventurous start to life, first being rescued by a cliff abseil by the British Divers Marine Life rescue and Jess, she works here at the Seal Sanctuary. I still had my umbilical cord attached so they think I was about 2 days old. I was rescued on the 19th October and was very underweight; I had also been attached by adult seals. I am very noisy according to the team here and unfortunately am not eating fish for myself yet; you can come and see me make noise in the nursery pools.

12/11/13: As I was in good condition with no wounds they moved down to the nurseries. My eye ulcer cleared up quickly and I am currently feeding by watching others. I weigh 16.5kg

8/12/13: After being in the nurseries for so long I’m still not doing too well feeding myself.

16/12/13: I still in the nurseries but I’m still not quite feeding for myself. Hopefully i’ll get it soon.

20/01/14: I’m still in the nurseries, alongside Titan.

"Miranda"

Miranda Pup

I am a female grey seal. I was found on the 19th September in St Just, with a severe swollen rear flipper, making it hard for me to swim. I’ve been on fluids since I got here and it’s up to me to start feeding from fish. I’ve had a course of treatment for my poorly flipper, which was being cleaned each day and now it’s fully healed you’ll find me in the nursery pools. I’m a bit of a slow swimmer but I am eating for myself.

12/11/13: I’ve now been put on an extended course of antibiotics for my swollen rear flipper, but the wounds on my flippers are healing well and I have learnt to feed myself in the water. I moved down to the nurseries on the 7th November to continue my rehabilitation.

8/12/13: Doing great with my rehabilitation I have now moved down to the Convalescence pool.

20/01/14: Waiting to be released, but will all the bad weather I just need to be patient.

"Galaxy"

Galaxy Pup

I am a female grey seal and was rescued on the 21st October after I was abandoned by my mum. They found me on Boscastle beach at 2 weeks old. I had to be force fed on arrival at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary and put on a course of antibiotics after arriving with a few puncture wounds. The animal care team say I am very pretty and another feisty female.

12/11/13: My wounds are now healed, and I’m sharing a pool with Moon, teaching me how to fish for myself!

8/12/13: You will find me in the Convalescence pool feeding for myself now

20/01/14: Waiting to be released, but will all the bad weather I just need to be patient.

"Crater"

Crater Pup

I am a male grey seal. I was rescued from Porthkidney Beach, Lelant on the 23rd October. I’m called crater because I have a massive gaping wound on my belly. I was also found severely dehydrated. The ‘crater’ is 4-5 inches long by 3-4inches deep; I also have a big gash on my body near my front flippers. One of my wounds goes right the way around my body; they think it was caused by fishing line. The vet has high hopes for a full recovery so left cross our flippers!

12/11/13: I was in isolation for a while but you can now see me in the hospital, where my wounds are healing well in salt water.

8/12/13: I’m down in the nurseries now, after my wound has healed very nicely, I’m still on treatment, but I am doing very well!

16/12/13: I’ve come off treatment for my wounds and very happy in the Nurseries!

20/01/14: I’ve done really well considering my injuries were so bad. You can now find me in the convalescence pool.

"Orion"

Orion

I am a male grey seal. I was rescued on the 26th October at Hawker’s Cove near Padstow with the help of the BDMLR. At 6 weeks old I had a good body condition weighing 25kg, but I did have open wounds to the rear flippers and LHS body. I was taken to BDMLR St Austell originally, and then moved here on the 30th October. No treatment was prescribed and my wounds have healed well.

12/11/13: Wounds have healed well and now I am in the nursery pools learning to feed myself.

8/12/13: You can find me in the convalescence pools.

20/01/14: Waiting to be released, but will all the bad weather I just need to be patient.

"Solar"

I am a male Grey Seal, and was rescued on the 27th October at Newlyn. At 5 weeks old I was malnourished weighing only 14kg, I also had minor wounds to all my flippers. I was transferred to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary on 1st November and had finished my treatment by this point; it was just my feeding that had to be monitored.

12/11/12: I went through the hospital quickly, learning to feed myself and am now in the nursery pools weighing a healthy 17kg

8/12/13: It wasn’t long before the animal care team thought I could progress even further and moved me to the convalescence pool.

20/01/14: Waiting to be released, but will all the bad weather I just need to be patient.

"Ventura"

Ventura Pup

I am a female grey seal and was bought in from Gwithian at just 10 days old on the 3rd November. I still had my white coat when they rescued me but was in good shape, I did have puncture wounds around my mouth and chin and a small gash close to my left ear and a small ulcer in my left eye. As a precaution I was given antibiotics and painkillers, but after a clear blood test I am off the treatment. Apparently I am quite feisty according to the animal care team and until I can feed myself properly the team are still helping me with feeds.

12/11/12: I am learning to feed in the water up in the hospital. I am still being supplemented with food until I can feed properly.

8/12/13: I was moved to the nursery pools and fed well in there so you can now find me in the Convalescence pools.

20/01/14: Waiting to be released, but will all the bad weather I just need to be patient.

"Venus"

Venus

I am a female grey seal and on the 6th November was rescued for Godrevy. I was 2 weeks old when they found me and had some small wounds to the back of my head and flippers. I first went to the British Divers Unit in St Austell and started my antibiotics there. I arrived in Gweek on the 8th November. I am very bright and have already started teaching myself to eat fish!

8/12/13: I did so well here at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary when I first arrived they moved me quite quickly down to the nursery pools, but due to a chest infection I had to go back to the hospital and also I wasn’t feeding well on my own. And even though I could do better I may try the nursery pools again to get in practise!

16/12/13: I was moved down to the nursery pools, as I really wanted to try to feed for myself, and I’m definitely nearly there!

20/01/14: You will now find me in the convalescance pool.

All the pens at Gweek were full so I had to spend a few days in St Austell with the BDMLR and on 8th November was moved here. My wounds are healing well and I’ve learnt to feed myself too, you can find me in the nursery pools.

8/12/13: I’m feeding well for myself down in the Nurseries, but a little more weight gain is needed before joining the likes of Aurora in the Convalescence pool.

16/12/13: I moved to the convalescence pool a few days ago and I’ve been doing really well!

20/01/14: Waiting to be released, but will all the bad weather I just need to be patient.

I am a male seal pup rescued at one week old on Bonfire night from St Mary’s, Isles of Scilly. I was well looked after by my mum – she fed me to a healthy 20kg before we got separated in the rough seas. I was monitored for 24 hours to check mum wasn’t coming back and then taken to safety. I have been fed milk 4 times a day and have just started having swimming lessons. I will soon be weaned onto fish before moving down to the outdoor pools

I am a female grey seal and was rescued on the 9th November near Bude. I was only 2 weeks old when I arrived and had multiple wounds on my flippers. I also had a high temperature and an ulcer in the right eye, which did rupture but my eye remained intact. After spending time in St Austell I came to Gweek and saw their eye specialist Vet, after some anaesthetic I had my third eyelid and outer lid stitched together to protect my eye and prevent more rupturing. I have regular visits from the Vet and am on antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs.

8/12/13: This week my Vet removed the stitches holding my eye in place. It’s a bit sore but the animal care team says it looks really good. The ulcer I had has healed really well and I have now been moved to the Nursery pools so my eye can heal better in the salt water, but I’m still not quite feeding myself.

I am a Male grey seal. I was rescued 20/01/14 by BDMLR from Loe Bar. I am named after Professor Brian Cox! I had some deep wounds to my shoulder and an eye infection. When I first arrived I was very sleepy and had a high temperature, I’ve since been doing really well after they gave me a course of treatment.

15/02/14: You will now find me down in the nursery pools

"Hubble"

Hubble

I am a male grey seal pup and was rescued on 24/01/14 by BDMLR from Trevaunance Cove, St. Agnes. I was around 10 weeks old, and had a very high temperature on the beach. I have been on treatment and hopefully will be able to go outside soon. The animal care team say I am a quiet seal and although I make a lot of mess, I eat fish for myself already!

"Erica"

Erica

I am a female grey seal, and was rescued on 25/01/14 by BDMLR from Porthjoke, Newquay. I had a wound on my side and rear flippers. I also had a mouth and chest infection, which they put me on a course of treatment for. I’m in the hospital and am being fed fish at the moment. Once I feel better and learn to eat fish for myself I will move down into the nursery pools with the others!

"Oberon"

Oberon

I am a male grey seal and was rescued on 25/01/14 by BDMLR from Roskilly, Newlyn. I came in at 8 weeks old but only weight 14kg, very underweight for my age. Before they move me to the nursery pools I need to put on some weight for myself, but I should progress quickly.

15/02/14: I have already learnt to eat fish for myself so hopefully will move pools soon.
