Otter Birthday Celebrations
Cameras were at the ready this week as our Asian Short Clawed Otter duo Starsky and Hutch celebrated their 7th Birthday. Some tasty treats were concealed within a present which Starsky and Hutch quickly unwrapped.
Dan is weighing the Sanctuary's colony of Humboldt Penguins. This is a regular task for the team here as weight is a good way of monitoring the health of our little black and white buddies. A sudden fluctuation or drop in weight can signal a health concern. At the time of filming, our Penguins are just about to go into their annual moult, which means we have to keep a special eye on their waist lines.
Training featuring Animal Care Assistant Dan and Andre the Californian Sea Lion
This video recorded by our animal care team features ACT assistant Dan as he works with Andre our Californian Sea Lion on his husbandry tranining. Here, a whistle from Dan signals Andre has done what Dan has asked him to do, and then he is rewarded with a fish. This is the easiest way of checking over our animals and making sure they are fit and healthy.
Seal pup release 30th May 2012
Here at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, we're bidding farewell to this season's remaining seal pups. With high tides on our side, and without a cloud in the sky, the team headed down to Gwithian beach where five splash happy seals were released back into the wild. Olaf, Diamond, Watson, Amethyst and Brunel happily made their way out into the surf with lots of encouragement from staff and members of the public.
We find out what's lurking in the Cornish surf
It was all gloved hands to the sea shore this weekend, as the Cornish Seal Sanctuary took to its local beaches with a brigade of environmental volunteers.
The Big Beach Clean Up is an environmental initiative launched after the Marine Conservation Society joined forces with Marks and Spencers for a Forever Fish campaign, which aims to protect our fish stocks and the marine environment for the future.
Lunchtime with our Seal pups!
Dan Feeding a Peckish Andy Murray
This video features our Animal Care Assistant Dan as he prepares to feed rescued seal pup Andy Murray. As you can see, Andy Murray is very peckish, and doesn't mind letting Dan know that he wants his milk!
Underwater training with our Sea Lions!
Tamara doing underwater training with our Curios Sea Lions Noito and Diego
This video features our Animal Care Assistant doing underwater training with our two Sea Lions Noito and Diego. Enrichment is a key part of our training programme here at the Sanctuary, and this particular enrichment activity is open to the public this Easter. Come along to the Sanctuary and work with our experts on our vital enrichment programme.
