Cornish Seal Sanctuary Celebrates the Best of Britain

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary will be marking the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and paying a special tribute to two key historic figures when it releases five seals this week.

On 30th May at 1pm, Sanctuary staff and five seals will head to Gwithian beach.

Grey seal Diamond, originally rescued by the RSPCA at just two weeks of age, has faced a long rehabilitation process at the Seal Sanctuary after suffering from severe malnutrition in the wild.

After learning to fight for fish to get into shape for life in the wild, Diamond will be released just days before the nation celebrates the Queen’s Jubilee.

Brunel, named after civil engineer and bridge builder extraordinaire Isambard Kingdom Brunel, has recovered from dehydration, malnutrition and multiple puncture wounds to his rear flipper.

Along with Diamond and Brunel, Olaf Schmid, a grey seal named after the late Staff Sergeant and ammunition technician Olaf Sean George Schmid, is also to be freed.

Olaf Schmid was awarded the George Cross for bravery during the Afghanistan conflict.

Two more grey seals Watson and Amethyst will also be heading into the surf on Gwithian beach.

Seal release montage

With high tides on our side, and without a cloud in the sky, the team here at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary headed down to Gwithian beach where five splash happy seals were released back into the wild. Olaf, Diamond, Watson, Amethyst and Brunel happily made their way out into the surf with lots of encouragement from staff and members of the public.
