Giant Whiptail Stingray
Christian the Giant Whiptail Stingray lives in our 500,000 litre Ocean Display.
Christian is 1.5m long and carries a 10cm barb. The barb is Christian's defensive weapon and can cause serious injury. He is fed daily on a diet of squid, whiting, pouting and mackerel. Christian is extra special as he is 1 of only 3 whiptail stingrays in Europe and SEA LIFE hope to find a partner for him in the future.
Don’t miss Christians feeding time at 2:30pm daily

- Whiptail rays range in size from 18cm to almost 2m across
- The flattened bodies of stingrays allow them to effectively conceal themselves in their environment as they bury beneath sand or mud and hide beneath it
- Because their eyes are on top of their bodies and their mouths on the undersides, stingrays cannot see their prey; instead, they use smell and electroreceptors similar to those of sharks to detect prey
