New for 2014
We've made some big changes to SEA LIFE Blackpool for 2014 including introducing two new interactive experiences; Shark Mission and Octopus Hideout.
Delve deeper into the amazing world of sharks in our new state-of-the-art Shark Mission and discover more about the plight of the world’s most misunderstood ocean predators.
Shark Mission lets you step into the virtual world of sharks, bringing to life the special abilities and fascinating behaviour of this ancient ocean creature. They really are ancient; Sharks have been around longer than Dinosaurs – over 350 million years!
Your mission, if you chose to accept it is… to use the giant interactive touch screens to learn more about these amazing creatures, find out who’s better at catching fish – you or a shark and even X-Ray a Great White Shark! Don’t miss our Shark Nursery where you’ll see baby sharks ranging from Bamboo Sharks to Blue-Spotted Stingrays (yes, Rays are a kind of Shark too). Whilst on your mission you’re going to see over 100 sharks from 20 different species!
We've also introduce Four once-in-a-lifetime Shark Experiences including Snorkelling in our Ocean Display, Feeding our Sharks, becoming a Shark Keeper for the day and spending the night Sleeping with the Sharks! Find out more here >
Betty & Boris
To coincide with the launch of Shark Mission we recently welcomed Boris the Bowmouth Guitarshark. Along with joining a whole host of sharks already residing in the Ocean Display at SEA LIFE Blackpool, Boris has been reunited with Betty making them the only pair of Bowmouth Guitarsharks in the UK. The pair originally lived together at the National SEA LIFE Centre Birmingham but we’re not able to breed due to some pesky Hammerhead Sharks, we’re hoping for better luck here in Blackpool. Keep checking back for more progress on their story.
Breeding programmes are an essential part of protecting our marine heritage. Our Bowmouth Guitarshark breeding programme is helping to maintain populations of this vulnerable species in the wild. Find out more about SEA LIFE’s Breed Rescue Protect programme here >>
Step into the amazing underwater world of the octopus in the all new Octopus Hideout. This amazing and interactive new feature includes a variety of octopus and their cephalopod cousins.
As you walk through this enticing, brightly coloured zone you’ll learn more about these mysterious and highly intelligent creatures. Octopus are experts at hiding, can you find each one hiding in its lair?
On your journey through the Octopuses lair be sure to look out for:
Giant Pacific Octopus
Atlantic Longarm Octopus
