2012 Development

From the end of October 2011 until mid-May 2012, we were closed for refurbishment. The video below tells you a bit more about what went on!

FAQ: What happens if my Sea Life annual pass expired when you were closed?

Throughout the development, we have been taking photos to track how much things have changed! Click on an area to see the progress.

**30th April 2012 (week 27)
With less than 2 weeks until re-opening, all the teams are very busy right now. More photos have been added from last week, but everything is coming together very quickly so there are significant changes happening every day.

Don't forget your tickets to you can see the all new aquarium for yourself!

6th January 2012 (week 10)
Happy New Year! Over the Chrismas and New Year period, the shell of the shop, admissions and entrance corridor has started to become visible. The majority of the paint in the arcade arches has been stripped off now too revealing the original brickwork underneath.

22nd December 2011 (week 8)
On Wednesday, we found 2 terrapins abandoned outside our entrance in a 'Celebrations' box. Fortunately, we found them in time, before they got too cold and could possibly have died. It is lucky that we still have aquarists working here who were able to set up a tank for them. They quickly made their way under the heaters in the tank to warm up & were named Jingle & Belle! We must stress that it is dangerous to leave creatures out in the cold, and also outside a place that may not even be able to home them. Occassionally, we will take creatures, but most of the time, we don't have the room or resources so please think carefully when buying pets as to whether you will be able to care for them.

Jingle & Belle!

15th December 2011 (week 7)
The biggest change this week has been in admissions & the shop. Both of these areas are being redesigned so the adjoining wall has been knocked through.

The stonemasons are still hard at work in the arcade stripping back the paint to reveal the original brickwork underneath.

9th December 2011 (week 6)
It seems like more scaffolding is going up by the day! A large proportion of the arcade floor is covered with plastic sheeting, and it also hangs down between the pillars for protection while the stonework is being restored.

The staff have been painting the areas that are unaffected by the refurbishment works and looking after the creatures that are still here with us.

24th November 2011 (week 4)
This week, our staff have taken the opportunity to do some gardening! The plants and trees alongside the entrance steps have been tidied up and are looking much better.

The creatures that are still here are all getting on fine and are unaffected by the works taking place. The fish that were moved to Weymouth and Great Yarmouth have all settled in well too.

16th November 2011 (week 3)
Areas are looking a little tidier than they were last week! Work has started on the stonework in the Victorian arcade which is a very specialised and intricate job. The plan for the behind-the-scenes tour is also developing further, and looks very exciting!

Plaque A - wk 03

After the exisitng submarine area was removed, we came across an interesting plaque about the original build and reconstruction.

9th November 2011 (week 2)
Our doors have been closed for over a week now, and the amount of work that has already been done is amazing! The team here, along with members of other Sea Life Centre teams, have really been working hard. There are now no creatures in the Victorian arcade, they are safely in their temporary homes.

The cafe area, shop and submarine have also been emptied, so things certainly look different around here!

24th October 2011 (-1 week)
Only 1 week today until we close for our refurbishment works! As it's half term, we are busy, but everyone is enjoying our shark week activities and having one last look around before hopefully coming back to visit when we relaunch next year!

The plans for the new features - Jelly Disco & the behind the scenes tour are looking very exciting, so the team here can't wait to start putting the plans into action.

17th October 2011 (-2 weeks)
It is 2 weeks today until we close our doors for the winter. If you are a regular guest, you will know that this is not an annual closure. As you will have read on the home page, we are closing for extensive refurbishment and the addition of 2 new exciting features.

Our Displays team here are very busy at the moment to prepare for the close and for the work to start. The welfare of our creatures is of utmost importance and has been our priority whilst all the planning has taken place, and still is taking place! A small proportion of creatures will be moved to other SEA LIFE Centres temporarily, but the majority will be staying with us, and just being relocated to a safer area whilst works are happening.

The rest of the SEA LIFE team are all working together to make sure that everyone knows we are closing so we don't have any guests turning up and being disappointed. From 15th - 30th October, we are celebrating Shark Weeks with lots of activities going on around the centre, so that we go out with a bang!
