Making Waves: How SEA LIFE Helped the Ocean in 2024!
- Sunday 15th December 2024
Grab your goggles – because 2024 was a whale of a year for SEA LIFE and the SEA LIFE Trust! From rescuing turtles to cleaning beaches and helping sharks return to the wild, these ocean heroes made some serious splash around the globe. Let’s dive into the highlights!
One Big, Splashy Clean-Up!
In September, SEA LIFE hosted a 24-hour Global Beach Clean, and people all over the world joined in! From tiny tots to grandparents, families rolled up their sleeves and collected piles of plastic from beaches, rivers, and lakes. It was messy, fun, and made a huge difference for marine life.
Baby Sharks to the Rescue
In Indonesia, SEA LIFE worked with ReShark to help endangered zebra sharks. These stripey little swimmers were raised in special nurseries and released into the wild. It’s like a shark comeback story – and it’s working!
Turtle TLC
All across the world – from the UK to the USA to Australia – over 100 sea turtles were rescued, healed, and released back into the sea. These turtles got a second chance thanks to the amazing care teams who helped them recover from injuries and illness.
Whale-tastic New Home
In Iceland, two beluga whales, Little Grey and Little White, were the first to move into the world’s very first open-water whale sanctuary! Now, instead of performing in tanks, they get to explore a peaceful ocean bay full of natural wonders.
Coral Gardeners in Action
In places like Indonesia and Florida, SEA LIFE helped repair coral reefs using things called reef stars—like underwater playgrounds for coral to grow on. These coral gardens give homes to thousands of sea creatures!
Plastic Patrol in Sydney
SEA LIFE Sydney used floating bins called Seabins to clean the harbour, collecting over 200,000 plastic items and filtering millions of litres of water. That’s one clean ocean neighbourhood!
Learning, Laughing, and Helping the Sea
All year, SEA LIFE made learning fun with events like World Oceans Day, where kids and families discovered cool facts, met awesome sea creatures, and learned how to be ocean heroes at home.
From saving animals to scrubbing shorelines, SEA LIFE’s 2024 was all about action, care, and ocean love. Whether you visited an aquarium or picked up rubbish, you were part of it. Let’s keep swimming forward to protect our amazing blue planet! 🐠💙
