Safeguarding future generations of sharks

Boo! Sharks might be a little frightening, but they’re some of our favourite ocean creatures.

That’s why we’re working to protect them for the future. In Australia, our aquariums are working with local scientists to develop a programme of assisted breeding for sharks.

Using semen collected from male sharks at SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast, we artificially inseminated brownbanded bamboo sharks at SEA LIFE Melbourne.

Our programme will help create a gene bank for endangered shark species – like the slow but gentle grey nurse shark.
