STUDENTS OF DARUSSFAKA SPENT THE LONGEST NIGHT AT SEA LIFE TO DRIVE ATTANTION TO SHARK FINNING!

In order to draw attention to endangered species of sharks, the students spent December 21, the longest night of the year, at the aquarium by participating in the Aquarium’s “Shark Sleepover” night. A SEA LIFE expert gave the students information about how all sea creatures, especially sharks, can be protected.

Zebra sharks loves classic music

The zebra shark in the aquarium with many other species of shark showed a reaction that surprised everyone. When the Zebra Shark began to show aggressive behavior during mating season our experts chose a more ‘soothing’ method. Our experts played classical music in the tank and they observed that the shark was responding. The zebra shark displayed noticeable calm and docility and started to get along better with the other shark species in the aquarium. Our curator expects our zebra shark species to mate in the very near future. Music has a proven positive effect on animals. In a study conducted in Greece it was determined that sharks, which were exposed to Mozart, grew faster.

CHILDREN HELP THE STOCKTAKE AT SEA LIFE ISTANBUL

SEA LIFE ISTANBUL HOME TO 500 SPECIES OF FIH, TWICE AS MUCH THAN MARMARA SEA

Experts and kids chechked 47 aquarium tanks and the quarantine area together and counted all creatures including the newcomers and newly born babies. SEA LIFE’s expert team and younger assistant counted each 15.478 creature in 500 different species individually and updated aquarium’s stock data. Younger visitors who sccessfully completed the stocktaking like adult experts learned interesting informations from aquacultural engineers while taking responsibility of this important task.

ONE MOTHER THOUSANDS OF BABY

THE WORLD'S OLDEST CREATURE GAVE BIRTH TO THOUSANDS OF BABY

Our horse shoe crab gave birth to thousands of baby. While our expert aquarists making their routine controls they saw small transparent bubbles at the horse shoe crab tank on the surface. After they looked carrefully they realised that there are thousands of baby horse shoe crabs swimming there. Later on they collect all babies and moved them to another tank at the quarantine area to protect them from the adults. Our curator says “horse shoe crab can resist against nature’s extreme conditions and can see the end of the World. Unless killed by a mankind!” Giving that much of baby can be a message from a horse shoe crab to humanity: “I want to live!”

MIRACLE AT THE SEA LIFE AQUARIUM

A rare natural phenomenon has occurred at the SEA LIFE Aquarium. An ‘Aetobatus Narinari’ ray has become pregnant despite despite not having been in contact with a male. When it is considered that the ray, which is around 7.5 years old, has been living in the aquarium without a male of the same species, this event is very puzzling. The ray mating with another species to become pregnant is highly unlikely to imagine when scientific reality is considered. Rays have been know to stock sperm and not give birth until they decide the timing is right. However, this possibility does not seem likely for a pregnant ray that has never encountered a male.

AQUARISTS COMPLETED HEALTH CHECK OF EVERY SINGLE 15.000 SEA CREATURE

During the natural process of living, other organisms can become unwell or injured just like people. As the Istanbul SEA LIFE Aquarium, we perform health checks as well as various total water parameter analyses every day for the 15 thousand sea creatures from hundreds of different species so they can live a healthy life within our structure. Once a year we also conduct a widespread general check-up which includes all of the living organisms in our facility. Throughout the health screening that last for a week we examine all sea creatures one by one, big and small.
