DİLEK CLUNG TO LIFE

The Caretta Caretta species sea turtle was found in October on the Çanakkale shore by a girl named Dilek. When the turtle with the life threatening injury on its head was found it was named Dilek. Dilek was first taken to Çanakkale March 18 University then brought to SEA LIFE.

After the initial tests on the Caretta Caretta that was brought to our SEA LIFE Turtle Hospital, we determined that it had fragmented breaks in its scull. In order to heal the sores around the broken bone that were protruding from its head we administered antibiotics and because the pain was too intense for it to eat we gave the turtle serum containing sugar. Our expert team and veterinarian cleaned Dilek’s wound daily and applied antibiotic pomade.

Dilek clung to life

After an intense course of antibiotics we were able to heal the turtle's infection and it began to accept food. At this point we stopped the serum treatment and started to administer vitamins and calcium tablets in the turtle’s food to build up its immune system.

Our curator and veterinarian decided that since the bone fragment in Dilek’s head protruded too much and in order not to lose the tissue underneath the bone they would perform and operation once the turtle has regained its strength. During the operation, which was done under general anesthesia the broken bones and the infected areas under the bones were cleaned out. The portions that could be joined were closed up with stitches but the remaining opening was treated with a honey application that nurtures tissues with the sugar it contains and formaldehyde to sterilize the area.

After the surgery our experts treated Dilek's head with a honey application that nurtures tissues with the sugar it contains and formaldehyde to sterilize the area.

Dilek will be treated with antibiotics and serum for a time and not given food in order to prevent infection in the area while the wound is healing, will stay at the SEA LIFE a bit longer to complete recovery period once the wound is fully healed and all her movements are corrected to regain her balance compensating for the air in her abdominal cavity.

We are excitedly waiting the day that Dilek will recovers and returns to Oceans
