About the Pirapitinga
Pirapitinga are related to Piranhas. They have an incredibly strong set of teeth with which they can crack their main food, nuts and seeds. However, they also feed on fish and other animals, which is why they are responsible for the decline of many animals. For Halloween, they sometimes eat pumpkin, too, as you can in the picture!
- The giant pacu is found mainly in the Amazon and Orinoco.
- In our rainforest section you can easily compare the Pirapitinga with the Piranha: While piranhas have very sharp teeth that are as sharp as razors, the Pirapitinga has compact, angular teeth.
- Pirapitinga become much bigger than piranhas; they reach lengths of 80 to 90 cm and can weigh about 20 kilograms.
