Ribboned Pipefish arrive in time for Christmas

 15 December 2015

SEA LIFE London Aquarium welcomes the UK’s only Ribboned pipefish, which measure in at just 20cm and whose ‘headwear’ bears a remarkable resemblance to Rudolph the reindeer’s.

Closely related to the more commonly known seahorse family, the pipefish have delicate branch-like appendages on their heads and bodies which serve as camouflage. With the approach of the festive season however, aquarists at the attraction have noted their striking resemblance to antlers.

Aquarist Luke commented, “We are thrilled to be the only aquarium in the UK to display these fascinating creatures, and with the festive period upon us we have chosen to name our eight Ribboned pipefish after Rudolph and his reindeer friends.”

Visitors to the SEA LIFE London Aquariumcan see the Ribboned pipefish on the special Behind the Scenes Tour in the run up to Christmas before they move into their permanent display in the Sea Dragon Kingdom area in the new year.
