Critter Friendly Celebrations: Tips for Ocean-friendly Birthday Parties

  • Monday 15th April 2019

We know single-use plastics can sabotage the sea and threaten seabirds and marine life. Here at SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium, we’ve seen the damage first hand during our regular beach and river cleanups. When you’re up to teeth with tasks, planning your child’s birthday party, prioritising the environment can feel far-fetched. So here are some great ideas to help you plan an event that’s fun for kids and safe for the sea.

DIY Decorations!

A 2016 CSIRO study showed balloons are one of the worst pollutants putting marine wildlife in danger. And you don’t have to be near the beach for balloons to have a bad effect. A little balloon can go a long way; ending up in our drains and waterways. So ditch the balloons and add some hip-hip-hooray by making paper and recycled decorations. Cut out paper strips from old magazines you’ve got lying around to make paper chain links or string together some brown paper bunting and get the kids to draw on it. Get crafty with your birthday boy or girl and make a big cardboard ‘Happy Birthday’ sign together or if you’re feeling creative, try making some paper lanterns. Bubble Machines make for some great fun too!

Kit Yourself Out

Single-use plastic cutlery is one of the most common items we find during our beach clean-ups. Help the environment, and your bank balance, by setting up a reusable kids’ party kit! Add bamboo cutlery and collect metal or reusable plastic cups. Paper plates are better than plastic; ask yourself if you could serve finger food on napkins? A colourful sheet or sarong makes for a tops tablecloth; they look lovelier than plastic, and won’t blow away easily. Ribbons and streamers make great decorations and what’s a party without lolly bags? Use paper bags or boxes, and get the kids to personalise them with textas. Get crafty! A party kit saves time and money, especially if you have more than one child. Keep your supplies in an old suitcase, and when the time comes – wheel it out like a boss!

Outsource the Fun!

At SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium, we throw the ultimate ocean-friendly kids birthday parties! A passionate party host will keep your kids on their toes over two fun-filled hours, as they party with sharks, penguins, turtles and more. We’ll share our love of beach conservation through interactive games and up-close creature encounters. Your pint-sized party animals won’t believe our amazing exhibits. Leave the food, decorations and invitations to us; we’ll even organise a pressie for your party-goer. And all-day admission is included, so you can all keep exploring once the candles have been blown out! For a fun and hassle-free party experience, SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium is a seriously fun venue.

However you celebrate your child’s birthday, it doesn’t take too much effort to make it an ocean-friendly event. The kids won’t notice the difference, but our marine life and birds will be much better off.
