The Cardiff University Otter Project

The Scottish SEA LIFE Sanctuary is now participating in the Cardiff University Otter Project alongside the International Otter Survival Fund (IOSF).

Did You Know?

Cardiff University Otter Project runs a long term environmental surveillance scheme, using otters found dead to investigate contaminants, disease, and population biology across the UK. Otters found dead are given a full post mortem examination, and sample and data are archived and used for a wide range of research.

The Cardiff University Otter Project has been operating since 1992 carrying out postmortem on dead otters from England and Wales. Since 1992, there has been virtually no work of this kind in Scotland.

For several years IOSF has struggled to obtain funding from the Scottish Government for this important work to continue in Scotland, but without success. At last they have sourced some financial support toward this work which is to be carried out by the Otter Project at Cardiff University.

How can we help?

The Scottish SEA LIFE Sanctuary is proud to be working alongside the IOSF as a deposit point for otters. If you find or see a dead otter please contact a member of the animal care team at the Sanctuary on 01631 720386 . By doing this you will be helping vital research into understanding what we can do to protect otters.
