Around sixty SEA LIFE staff walked a 20-mile stretch of the Jurassic coast last weekend to boost the coffers of a new charity!
Staff from SEA LIFE London Aquarium and colleagues from across the UK made the trek in two stages to raise money for the Sea Life Trust, which has been launched to support a wide range of crucial marine conservation causes.
The Trust is expected to receive an £8,000 boost, some of which will help fund the first Trust campaign: a bid to get the shipment of whale products through EU ports made illegal.
Teams from as far afield as London, Cornwall and Birmingham joined their London allies to complete the first afternoon leg from Durlston to Kingston. The Weymouth SEA LIFE Park laid on an evening of entertainment including food and live music, and most of the walkers bedded down for the night among the fishes in the various SEA LIFE display pods. Next morning they walked from Kimmeridge Bay to Durdle Door.
As well as trying to end whaling, the Sea Life Trust will work to tackle plastic pollution; support marine protected zones; conservation efforts for sharks, turtles and seahorses…and many more.
“We already have over £100,000 in the fighting fund and the walk will provide another useful injection,” said organiser Jamie Chegwin, SEA LIFE marketing executive.
The effort was also well supported by sponsors including caterers 3663, the Print Design Team and Picsolve. There was even a team of volunteer masseurs led by University of Gloucestershire sports therapy student Abbie Williams to help soothe aching muscles.
