Stop whaling

stop whaling

At SEA LIFE we are committed to stopping whaling. Whales are such incredible animals, but they face so many threats. But, let’s face it, there is no humane way to kill a whale, no sustainable market for whale meat and no ethical justification for continuing to butcher them.

So please join us by signing our SEA LIFE petition to stop whaling. We have set this up in association with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society.

As well as helping millions of people to discover the marvels of the marine world the SEA LIFE network has an important role to play in helping safeguard our seas and their inhabitants for the future.

As well as fostering conservation through enhanced awareness, we regularly make a more direct contribution towards conservation and marine animal welfare. In recent years a special program has been established to manage and develop these activities. That program is called Save Our Seas – S.O.S for short.

What we do to protect the whales

We have supported the Whale & Dolphin Conservation Society by sending letters to environment ministers across Europe urging them to block a request from Greenland to be able to slaughter 10 humpback whales. Greenland is already allowed a quota of minke, fin and bowhead whales for 'subsistence', in other words to support the livelihoods of a small population of native Inuits. Unfortunately their whale hunt is becoming increasingly commercial.

School children deliver the message - stop whaling!

In June 2010 a mass postcard petition against return of commercial whaling was hand-delivered to EU Commissioner for the Environment. Hundreds and thousands of postcards filled in by visitors to all the SEA LIFE Centers calling for an end to whaling were among those delivered to European Commissioner for the Environment, Janez Potocnik, in Brussels.

The handover, by a group of Belgian schoolchildren, was staged just days before the International Whaling Commission (IWC) votes on a proposal to lift the current 24 year long ban on commercial whaling. The postcard petition was initiated by SEA LIFE and our campaign partner the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS), and has been run throughout SEA LIFE centers across Europe and in the US.
