Giant Leaf Insect

Riesenblattschrecke2

Did you know?

  • The giant leaf insect (lat. Siliquofera grandis) looks like a real leaf - complete with veins and “bite marks.” This is how it protects itself from predators. Females have an ovipositor on their abdomen for laying eggs.
  • The animals live in the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia and usually stay in the treecrowns. The vegetarians feed exclusively on leaves, such as blackberry, oak, or rose leaves.
  • They usually move slowly and swaying to look like a leaf in the wind. Giant leaf insects can “fly” when they are fleeing.
