Giant Millepede
Did you know?
Millipedes (lat. Mardonius parilis acuticonus) are found in Europe, parts of North Africa, and Western Asia. Fifty-eight species are known to exist in Germany.
They belong to the class Diplopoda, whose cylindrical bodies consist of many segments, usually with two pairs of legs per segment. When threatened, they curl up into a spiral to protect their soft abdomen. Some species secrete irritating substances that deter predators and are usually harmless to humans.
Nematopods are among the oldest land animals on earth. Some species glow slightly under UV light. The animals hatch with few segments and gain new ones with each moult.
