- Millipedes (lat. Mardonius parilis acuticonus) are found in Europe, parts of North Africa, and Western Asia. Fifty-eight species are known to exist in Germany.
- They belong to the class Diplopoda, whose cylindrical bodies consist of many segments, usually with two pairs of legs per segment. When threatened, they curl up into a spiral to protect their soft abdomen. Some species secrete irritating substances that deter predators and are usually harmless to humans.
- Nematopods are among the oldest land animals on earth. Some species glow slightly under UV light. The animals hatch with few segments and gain new ones with each moult.
