European pond turtle
SEA LIFE Oberhausen is committed to reintroducing the European pond turtle. Together with NABU Rhineland-Palatinate, we want to reintroduce these animals, which were once native to this area. To this end, they are bred and released into suitable waters at around four years of age. The aim of the project is to reintroduce 500 specimens in Rhineland-Palatinate over the next twelve years. This should help the endangered species to achieve a stable population again. Since the Middle Ages, the number of these animals has continued to decline. At that time, they were mainly caught and eaten during Lent, as all animals that lived in water were considered fish. Increasing environmental pollution during industrialisation caused the population to decline further. And the animals found fewer and fewer places to lay their eggs. At SEA LIFE Oberhausen, the animals are cared for until they are big and strong enough to be released into the wild. SEA LIFE Speyer takes on this task together with Nabu on site.
German Ocean Foundation

To this end, it brings together initiatives and projects from all areas of the maritime economy, politics, research and society to form a powerful voice for our oceans.
