Germany's biggest shark nursery at SEA LIFE Oberhausen
Shortly before the summer vacations in 2018, the biggest shark nursery of Germany at SEA LIFE Oberhausen was re-designed. A special highlight, in addition to the 148 square meter shallow water tank with young blacktip reef sharks, bluespotted ribbontail rays and a variety of tropical fish, is now also the recreated mangrove forest, through which visitors are guided to experience the lifes of sharks.
Mangroves are a collective term for trees and bushes in the tidal zones, which are essential for the animal world to survive. Since nearly all small and large shark species hide themselves in mangroves in nature, SEA LIFE Oberhausen informs the visitors particularly about the protection and preservation of these threatened plants.
The newly designed theme area in mangrove style represents the natural nursery for sharks as well as a birth and feeding place for the marine animals, in which they can feed and grow up. Shallow water, a large surface area and the very best food not only cause enthusiasm among the sea dwellers, but are also intended to give visitors a vivid understanding of the subject of rearing. Already in the past SEA LIFE Oberhausen could announce impressive breeding successes.
When visiting the unique underwater dome, visitors also get a 360 degree panoramic view of the youngest offspring and can get very close to them in this way, without getting wet!
