European pond turtle conservation project

SEA LIFE Oberhausen is committed to the reintroduction of the European pond turtle.

Together with NABU Rhineland-Palatinate we would like to reintroduce the animals that once lived here. Hence they are bred and released into nature with approx. four years at suitable waters.

The aim of the project is to reintroduce 500 specimens to Rhineland-Palatinate within the next twelve years. This should help the endangered species to regain a stable population. Since the Middle Ages, the number of animals has been declining steadily. At that time they were caught and eaten mainly during the fasting period, since all animals that lived in the water were considered fish. Due to the increasing environmental pollution during the industrialization, the stocks continued to decline. And the animals could find less and less places to lay their eggs.
