A special look
The long tentacles of the compass jellyfish are coiled in a spiral shape and can cause skin irritation and inflammation in humans due to their venom. The tentacles are white, yellowish or orange, and rarely brown.
The bell diameter of this jellyfish can grow up to 35 cm and is said to resemble a compass rose.
Two genders
Compass jellyfish are hermaphrodites, meaning that there is a phase in their life cycle during which they have both male and female reproductive organs. Initially, they develop male organs and later have both male and female reproductive organs at the same time. During this phase, they can fertilise themselves. They incubate the eggs inside their bodies and then release the larvae into the open sea.
This species of jellyfish is found in the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea and the North Sea.
