Octopus

  • SEA LIFE, Day & Night Ocean Experience

The Octopus is one of the most intelligent species!

Considered one of the most intelligent invertebrate species (that means animals with no backbone) octupus are solitary creatures that hunt at dusk. They eat all manner of things from crabs to crayfish and even other molluscs.

Common Octopus at SEA LIFE

Which creature has three hearts, eight arms and a doughnut shaped brain?

You guessed it, it's the octopus!

Did you also know?

  • Two of their hearts pump blood through each of the two gills, while the third pumps blood through the body
  • Octopuses can also change the colour of their skin to camouflage perfectly with their surroundings, helping them to sneak up on prey as well as hide from predators
  • A common octopus will release a cloud of black ink to mask an attacker's view, giving them time to swim away. The ink even contains a substance that can dull a predator's sense of smell, making the octopus harder to track
  • Octopuses collect crustacean shells and other objects to build their homes
