Welcome to the Octopus Cave!
In the dim and mysterious cave lives our adult octopus, whose intelligence and camouflage skills make it one of the most fascinating animals in the exhibition. So keep your eyes open and take a closer look into the tank—you might just spot this master at blending into its surroundings.
The Octopus Cave has been designed as a home for an adult octopus. When younger, this individual lives in the Tropical Zone, where a smaller, more suitably sized tank provides ideal conditions for the tiny baby octopus to grow and explore its environment. A smaller tank also makes caring for and monitoring the young octopus easier. Once the octopus reaches adulthood, it moves into the cave to live.
Can you find the octopus?
Octopuses are masters of disguise, as they can change the color and texture of their skin to match their environment. So, look closely into the tank to spot the hiding octopus.

Octopuses are solitary animals that go hunting at dusk. They eat a wide variety of prey, such as crabs, crayfish, and even other molluscs.

An octopus has three hearts! Two of these hearts pump blood to the gills, while the third heart pumps blood to the rest of its body.

When an octopus feels threatened, it can release a cloud of black ink to obscure the attacker’s vision and buy time to escape. The ink can also impair the predator’s sense of smell, making it harder to track the octopus.

Octopuses are considered among the most intelligent invertebrates. They have strong problem-solving skills and can even open screw-top jars, as long as the contents are tempting enough.
