The phenomenon is caused by an algae called Noctiluca scintillans, also known as sea sparkle. This algae produces flashes and glowing light — when the water moves, the result looks truly magical.

It is produced by many deep-sea fish, jellyfish, and crustaceans. This glowing light is highly beneficial for animals, as it helps them defend themselves, communicate, and attract prey or mates.
