The new Sea Savers badge has been pioneered by SEA LIFE Blackpool and Girlguiding North West England, with the hope it will be rolled out nationally, and aims to inspire members aged four to 18-years-old to protect the oceans and sea creatures that live within them.

To mark the launch, a group of Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers from Lancashire West County were invited to SEA LIFE Blackpool where they successfully completed the challenge pack and became the first members to be awarded the new badge, which was presented to them by Kyle Woodcock, Head of Operations.

The pack gives girls the opportunity to learn more about marine conservation and covers three engaging themes and six challenges - what’s in the ocean and plant life, eco systems and food chains, and looking after our oceans. To earn the badge members must successfully complete two activities from each theme, which include educational, baking, games, and arts and crafts.

Kyle Woodcock, Head of Operations at SEA LIFE Blackpool said; “Congratulations to the first cohort of Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers to be awarded the new Sea Savers badge. It’s an honour to award the first ever Girlguiding North West England badge focused on marine conservation, and I’m excited to see more members across the region earn it.”

“SEA LIFE Blackpool works to protect sea creatures, raise awareness of endangered species, and inspire children and young people to safeguard our oceans for the future. The brand new Sea Savers badge perfectly aligns with our approach and I hope it empowers girls to take action.”

Kelly Hunter, Executive Manager at Girlguiding North West England, said; “We are excited to announce the launch of the Sea Savers challenge pack; it has been wonderful to work with SEA LIFE Blackpool. The team who put this challenge and badge together have worked immensely hard, and we couldn’t be prouder to share it with you all. We want to encourage girls to understand the importance of marine conservation, and taking part in the challenge will help them appreciate the part that they play. We are really looking forward to seeing how everyone gets on.”

In Girlguiding UK’s 2023 Girls’ Attitude Survey, over 50 percent of girls cited conservation and the impact of climate change on the environment as an issue that worries them some or most of the time.
