Our History: A Deep-Rooted Connection with the Ocean
When did the London Aquarium open?
SEA LIFE London Aquarium opened in March 1997, housed in the historic County Hall on the South Bank of the River Thames. Designed to showcase marine biodiversity and raise awareness of ocean conservation, the aquarium quickly became one of the most popular family attractions in London thanks to its engaging displays and educational focus. It featured a range of exhibits replicating aquatic environments from around the world, including an Atlantic Coast section, which remains part of the experience today.
Who Owns SEA LIFE London?
In 2005, Merlin Entertainments acquired the SEA LIFE London Aquarium and relaunched it in 2009 under the SEA LIFE brand. Since then, it has been developed into one of the flagship locations within Merlin’s global network of marine conservation attractions.
Over the years, SEA LIFE London has introduced several major features:
-
2009: Aquarium Tunnel
-
2011: Gentoo penguin colony
-
2016: Ocean Invaders
-
2018: Rainforest Adventure
Today, SEA LIFE London Aquarium welcomes over one million visitors annually and is widely regarded as the best aquarium in London. As part of the Merlin Entertainments group, it can be visited alongside other popular attractions such as the London Eye, Madame Tussauds, and Shrek’s Adventure!, often as part of combined ticket offers.
Our Mission: Breed, Rescue, Protect
At the core of SEA LIFE London is a commitment to marine education and conservation. We’re dedicated to marine conservation, education and inspiring the next generation of ocean protectors. Through our global “Breed, Rescue, Protect” initiative, we work to safeguard sea creatures and their habitats:
-
Breed: We run vital breeding programmes to support endangered marine species and help restore wild populations.
-
Rescue: Our expert teams respond to marine animals in need, rehabilitating injured or stranded creatures.
-
Protect: We actively campaign against plastic pollution, habitat destruction and unsustainable fishing practices.
In partnership with conservation groups like the SEA LIFE Trust and the Marine Conservation Society, we champion long-term ocean health, both in the UK and around the world. Every visit to SEA LIFE London supports our mission. With hands-on exhibits, feeding demonstrations and expert talks, we empower families and ocean lovers to better understand marine ecosystems and take meaningful steps to protect them.
