SEA LIFE Aquarium revealed

  • Friday 28th September 2012

Auckland's legendary underwater attraction, Kelly Tarlton's, has undergone a $5.5 million upgrade and re-launches on Saturday as the all-new Kelly Tarlton's SEA LIFE Aquarium.

With over 30 exhibits and over 80 different species, the sea change means Kelly Tarlton's SEA LIFE Aquarium will continue to inspire, thrill and delight visitors of all ages for many more years to come.

Featuring eight new themed zones Kelly Tarlton's SEA LIFE Aquarium now boasts unique new attractions including New Zealand's first ever live jellyfish display, the world's only display of Spiny Sea Dragons and the world's biggest species of stingray, one ray which alone weighs over 240kg and has had 65 pups in its 27 years at Kelly Tarlton's!

At the heart of the re-development is a brand new walk through penguin encounter that has become home to the worlds largest penguin colony display and allows visitors to get closer than ever before to these magnificent Antarctic creatures.

Kelly Tarlton's SEA LIFE Aquarium General Manager, James Thomas, says, "We're excited to be able to offer our guests a truly face-to-face experience with these majestic Antarctic penguins. The redevelopment has enabled us to deliver an even more enriching experience for visitors, as well as state-of-the-art enclosures for all our animals."

Further developments include Kelly Tarlton's famous Shark Tunnel - the first in the world now Maori Pacifica themed - which not only houses New Zealand's largest collection of sharks, but now also contains original artefacts which Kelly Tarlton himself discovered during his years exploring shipwrecks.

In the new Rockpool Experience visitors will get the change to hold a crab or touch a star fish and with the new animal themed quiz trail this truly is an interactive day out.
