World Oceans Day

  • Sunday 7th June 2015

World Oceans Day is a a yearly event celebrating the ocean and taking action to highlight important issues.

The theme in 2015 is 'Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet' - and Kelly Tarlton's SEA LIFE Aquarium is encouraging people to take the #BetterBag Challenge - a promise not to take any disposable bags for a year. Everyone who comes in on World Ocean Day and gives us a plastic bag will be given a reusable eco-bag in exchange.

The Kelly Tarlton's team will also be helping clean up our backyard. On World Oceans Day, members of our curatorial team will be working with people from PROJECT AWARE - a global movement of scuba divers who are working in their local areas to protect the ocean. The team will be taking part in a Dive Against Debris - and collecting rubbish found underwater in Okahu Bay. The rubbish collected will be surveyed and entered into the global database - which helps raise awareness of the scale of ocean pollution worldwide.
