King Penguin Chicks

  • Monday 20th February 2012

We now have a number of amazing baby creatures in the house, including King Penguin chicks, who are now a few weeks old and almost big enough to see.

The babies hatch on their parents feet, under the parent's pouch, and stay there until they are big enough to cope with the cold environment they live in.

King chicks are unusual in that their baby feathers are brown and fluffy. As they get older they fledge (lose their feathers) and grow an adult set of black, white, and yellow feathers.

Next month we'll be putting even more exciting baby creatures out on display - so watch this space!
