Celebrating International Wheelchair Day
We value learning from our guests and team members with lived experience and recognise the importance of listening and adapting to be inclusive to all guests. “Over recent years, we have been dedicated to making all of Merlin Entertainments’ attractions as accessible as possible. We believe that every guest should be able to enjoy magical moments at our attractions. To achieve this, we will continuously improve our environments for accessibility and listen to the voice of our guests. That is why global awareness days like International Wheelchair Day are so important to Merlin." said Ian Wood, VP of Merlin Entertainments Australia and New Zealand.
"We acknowledge that there is still work to be done to ensure our attractions are fully accessible. We believe that learning from the lived experiences of our guests and teams will help us shape our accessibility action plans and make meaningful progress.”
Ian continued, "In recognition of International Wheelchair Day, we are delighted to offer free entry to mobility device users and their carer at our eight attractions across Australia and New Zealand."
Merlin Entertainments is committed to improving accessibility across all of its attractions. In recent months, we have made several key enhancements to ensure a more inclusive experience for all guests, including:
- A new wheelchair-accessible rockpool exhibits at SEA LIFE Sydney’s Rockpool Ranger Experience and SEA LIFE Melbourne’s Rocky Shores, allowing more visitors to interact with marine life up close.
- Upgraded Accessible Adult Changing Facility at WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo, providing improved amenities.
- A sensory room at SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium and the introduction of sensory mornings across Merlin’s attractions, designed to provide a calmer and more comfortable environment for neurodivergent guests.
We are always looking for ways to improve, and each year run an internal process to apply for capital investment to provide new ways to increase accessibility to our guests. We invite guests to join us in shaping a more inclusive experience by providing feedback on their visit. Whether attending during International Wheelchair Day or at another time, we welcome insights and are happy to discuss any suggestions further to ensure our attractions continue to evolve and meet the needs of all visitors.
