Fun Night Activities in Melbourne That Don’t Involve Drinking

  • Thursday 19th December 2019

If you’re having a temporary or permanent break from the booze, there’s still plenty of fun and exciting things to get up to in Melbourne after dark. When you get creative and think outside the alcohol square, this city is full of surprises.

After Hours Underwater

When you think of an after-hours, grog-free good time, you may not automatically think of SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium. But when the sun sets, the sea is still open for business; for ages 18+ on April 24, 2020 in the heart of the city. Venture into the underwater world and kickstart your evening! Feeling hungry?  – Head to the bistro for a bite. Then explore the aquarium with your plus-one, and enjoy the nighttime ambience of aquatic life. In our 2.2 million litre Oceanarium, see big, beautiful sharks, graceful, gliding rays, turtles and hundreds of other marine creatures. Don’t forget – there’s live music on the Upper Deck zone. Oh, what a night!

Queen Victoria Night Markets

For great vibes, check out these markets on Wednesday nights: 5pm-10pm. With this many food stalls, vibrant shopping, artisan wares and live entertainment – you won’t even remember you’re alcohol-free. Whether it’s winter or summer, there’s always a stack of activities; from roaring winter fires and delicious soups to fresh summer fruit mocktails and a pop-up volleyball court. Meet your favourites there; hear great music, have a great chat and a great time, without a booze-buzz.

Night Strolls

Dazzling skyline views and great chat. These are the two ingredients for a beautiful, low-key Melbourne evening. Head down to the Yarra River; when you’re by the water, you’ll see some of the best views in town. Amble along the banks and walk over the bridges with no agenda but the experience itself. Stop somewhere for a mocktail as you take in the glittering city lights. Near the Botanic Gardens is the Shrine of Remembrance; sit on the steps and gaze at the illuminated skyline. It’s Melbourne-tastic!

Sing Some Karaoke

Everyone loves a signature song, delivered to their besties in low lighting! BYO favourite tune; ABBA and any rock anthem – ever – are guaranteed to please. The key to karaoke success is: sing it loud and sing it proud. Without alcohol, you’ll probably be more in tune, and besides, it’s impossible not to smile when you’re singing.

A Food Adventure

When drinking is off the menu, cheese has got you! Let’s face it – the ultimate night is all about cheese – please. Milk the Cow is what dairy-dreams are made of. With fromageries in both St Kilda and Carlton, you can choose from an incredible array of world-class cheeses from all corners of the world. And while wine is a good friend of cheese, these fromage greats can stand on their own. Blue, brie, hard, soft – it’s all good! Afterwards, if you’re looking to satisfy your sweet tooth – treat yourself to dessert at Om Nom. This dessert bar at the Adelphi Hotel is a sweet-nirvana; there’s everything from panna cotta to a chocolate-centred ‘nut bomb.’ Yes, please.
