SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast Aquarium is saddened to announce the passing of its much-loved Australian fur seal, Groucho- who passed away on the weekend aged 24. The average lifespan of Australian fur seals is 15-20 years.

Groucho was rescued as a small pup 23 years ago estimated to be around 7 months old at the time. He was a mere 11.5kg when found on Warneet Beach in Victoria and showed an unusual comfort around humans. It was suspected that his early encounters with people led him to be reliant on human interaction, potentially due to being fed by well-meaning beachgoers. Despite numerous attempts at rehabilitation and release, Groucho's inability to display natural hunting skills rendered him unsuitable for re-release.

Groucho's journey from a vulnerable seal pup to a beloved resident at SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast Aquarium has underscored the importance of responsible interactions with wildlife and the tireless efforts invested in their well-being.

Jess Hart, Mammals Manager at SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast says: "Groucho delighted guests and trainers with his gentle nature and his impressive presence."

Groucho lived a rich life, but sadly his health deteriorated due to age related conditions. The compassionate animal team and dedicated veterinarians at SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast provided unwavering care and support.

Guests are encouraged to share their memories of Groucho on Facebook and Instagram.
