With our partnered registered charity (no. 1149058), The SEA LIFE Trust, we are proud to develop and support projects that protect marine wildlife and habitats across the world.
Through SEA LIFE, the Trust can reach a huge audience with the key messages about its areas of focus: marine protected areas, sustainable seafood, plastic pollution, and improved protection for sharks, seahorses, turtles and marine mammals.
Last year we raised over £300,000 globally to support the Trust's projects and partner organisations, protecting sharks, rays, turtles, whales, dolphins, seahorses, otters, penguins and many other creatures.
This year, SEA LIFE Trust is proud to have opened the world's first beluga whale sanctuary, which will be the new home to its first residents, two previously captive beluga whales, Little White and Little Grey.
They have journeyed an epic 6,000 mile journey from Shanghai aquarium to a new ocean home in a beautiful Icelandic bay.
This highly significant event is the first time that captive beluga whales have ever been released to an ocean sanctuary.
Having landed in Iceland, our vets and care team are happy with their progress and they are settling in nicely to their temporary care pool home. Little Grey and Little White will need to stay in the care pool for a 40 day quarantine period. The timing of their release in to the bay will be based on this, their acclimatisation to the new surroundings and their welfare. The attached Visitor Centre, aquarium and puffin rescue centre remain open still to the public.
All of us who care deeply about the welfare of whales and dolphins hope that it will signal a more positive future for these amazing animals.
