Work Experience

Want to work with us?

We are now accepting applications for a small group of volunteers to join the animal care team at SEA LIFE Manchester on a fixed-term work placement. The placement programme will give candidates the opportunity to work alongside our experienced aquarists in the day-to-day running of the aquarium exhibits. You will gain skills and experience in aquatic animal husbandry, species identification, animal behaviour, life support systems and water quality management to name just a few. You will also have the opportunity to work with a variety of taxa including elasmobranchs, crustaceans, and cnidarians.

With more and more people choosing to go to university, achieving a career within the animal care industry is becoming increasingly competitive. Completing a work placement programme such as this can be a great way of obtaining relevant experience and practical knowledge that will enhance your CV, and give you a competitive edge over other candidates when applying for jobs in the industry.

The successful applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or over
  • Applicants must be required to complete a placement as part of an educational course they attend
  • Applicants must be studying a relevant subject (such as zoology, marine biology, or animal management)

Please note placements are offered on a minimum 50 hour placement and and will be on a part-time unpaid basis.

As a company with a focus on research and development, we expect all placement students to be working towards a research project during their time in the department.

To apply, please send an up-to-date CV and a copy of your covering letter to sealife.volunteers@merlinentertainments.biz

Your covering letter should highlight why you are applying, and include an outline of your intended research project along with details of the days/hours you intend to commit. Applications submitted by post will not be considered.

Please note: due to the high number of applicants we receive, we may be unable to respond to all emails. If you do not hear back within 10 working days, please assume you have been unsuccessful on this occasion.

Good luck and we hope to see you soon!

**This program is carried out on a voluntary basis and is, therefore, unpaid**
