Keep Australia Beautiful Week: Batman Park Clean-Up!

  • Monday 27th August 2018

To celebrate Keep Australia Beautiful Week, SEA LIFE Melbourne stepped in to clean up Batman Park!

On Friday 24 August, SEA LIFE Melbourne staff and friends got together on the banks of the Yarra River at Batman Park with their gloves and rubbish bags in a litter removal effort to keep the waterway clean and encourage others to lend a hand! With the help of Magnus, our friendly shark, and Dick Gross, Chair of Keep Victoria Beautiful, 20 bags of rubbish were collected!

The theme for 2018's Keep Australia Beautiful Week (KABW) was SOS: Save Our Seas.  With SEA LIFE Melbourne keen to keep the ocean clean for the sake of all marine life, participation in KABW is an extension of our commitment to breed, rescue and protect!

What is Keep Australia Beautiful Week (20-26 August 2018)?

Keep Australia Beautiful Week is held late August each year, to raise awareness about the simple things we can all do in our daily lives to reduce our impact on the environment and encourage action. The key theme for the 2018 KAB Week was “SOS – Save our Seas”

Did you know?

  • Approximately 10 million tonnes of litter end up in the world’s oceans and seas each year.
  • It is estimated that 70% of marine litter is on the seabed, 15% is floating in the water column and 15% is what we find on our shores.
  • Marine litter consists of a wide range of materials, including plastic, metal, wood, rubber, glass and paper. However, it is dominated by plastic which accounts for 80% of the items found on our beaches.
